What is GS1 Barcode Registration?

A barcode is a machine-readable optical representation of data that uniquely identifies consumer products across global supply chains. GS1 India (affiliated with the Ministry of Commerce & Industry) is the only authorized standards body in India allocating legitimate Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs).

Major e-commerce marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart, Blinkit, BigBasket) and physical retail supermarkets (Reliance Retail, DMart) strictly mandate official GS1 barcodes. Products using unauthorized third-party barcodes face automatic delisting and catalog suspension.

Key Statutory Benefits & Business Advantages

Holding a verified, compliant registration delivers substantial commercial and legal protections:

Mandatory for E-Commerce Listing

Required by Amazon, Flipkart, Zepto, and Blinkit to create verified product listings without GTIN exemption errors.

Supermarket POS Scanner Ready

Enables point-of-sale optical scanning at physical retail chains like DMart, Reliance Retail, and Nature's Basket.

Globally Unique Identification

Allocates genuine GS1 India prefix (890) recognized across international supply chains in over 150 countries.

Anti-Counterfeit Protection

Guarantees brand ownership of product numbers, preventing third-party copycats from hijacking your listings.

Inventory & Warehouse Precision

Automate stock counting, shipment verification, and order fulfillment logistics with barcode-driven inventory systems.

Official Allocation Certificate

Receive genuine GS1 India allotment letter verifying your company's ownership of the allocated barcode sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cheap third-party websites sell recycled or unauthorized barcode numbers. Amazon and Flipkart actively cross-reference listings against the GS1 DataHub database. Non-GS1 barcodes result in immediate listing rejections or permanent account suspensions.
You need a separate barcode for each distinct product variant. For example, if you sell shampoo in 100ml, 200ml, and 500ml bottles, and in 2 fragrances, you have 3 x 2 = 6 unique SKUs requiring 6 distinct barcodes.
EAN-13 (13 digits) is the global standard used everywhere across India, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. UPC-A (12 digits) is predominantly used in North America (USA and Canada). GS1 India issues EAN-13 numbers.
GS1 barcodes are issued with flexible validity terms of 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, or 10 years based on the subscription chosen during application, and can be renewed periodically.
GS1 India fees are tiered based on your company's annual turnover and the number of barcodes applied for (e.g. 100 barcodes starts around ₹5,000 + GST for turnover under ₹5 Crore). Mazco charges a transparent advisory fee for drafting and allocation.
Once your numbers are allocated, you can generate high-resolution vector images (EPS, PNG, PDF) using the official GS1 DataHub tool, which can be directly embedded into your product packaging artwork.
